  • An ESA helps with a daily functioning because of a Psychological issue.
  • There are two laws that govern ESAs with additional rights.  The Air Carriers Access Act and the Amendment to the Fair Housing Act of 1988.
  • To qualify for an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) you must have a letter from a licensed mental health professional stating that a person has been diagnosed with a mental health diagnosis and their psychological condition must significantly limit at least one of life’s basic activity; such as their social, work or emotional functioning.  There needs to be a recommendation on the letter for the ongoing treatment to be an ESA.
  • They receive a letter on letter head stating the daily function effected.  The letter is given to the Airlines for Air Travel and to the Property Manager for Housing. The person needs the animal for emotional support to function better in life.
  • To be a service animal, it does need to do a task for the person, i.e., a seeing eye dog, predict low blood sugar, helps the hearing impaired.
  • A new category of service animal is the Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD) that is trained to help with Psychological Symptoms, like panic or PTSD and can recognize and respond to these psychological symptoms.
  • Therapy animals are trained animals that are given rights to only go into nursing homes, school and Hospitals
  • Here is 10 Benefits of Having an Emotional Support Animal. To prove this point 15 airports now have therapy dogs with handlers because they know that a dog in the vicinity of people calms them.  Airlines understand this and should be glad more people can bring their animals on the planes.  It helps us all.
